The Roatan International Airport (RTB) is responsible for nearly a quarter (23%) of the air traffic flowing into the country of Honduras. Also known by its proper name, the Juan Manuel Galvez International Airport (RTB) was named after a Honduran president. The airport is located on Roatan Island, about 35 miles off the coast of Honduras. Our airport is a huge tourist destination and the only international airport located on The Bay Islands of Honduras. The Roatan International Airport is the 10th busiest airport in Central America.

A Spanish Consortium
Although the airport has been operating since the 1960’s, the international terminal was appointed in 1993 and was first opened for service in 1995. The airport was remodeled by a Spanish consortium and today; it accommodates both commercial and private traffic, as well as international and domestic flights. Flight numbers in and out of RTB are rising every year as Roatan is quickly becoming one of the most visited islands in the entire Caribbean.

About Roatan Airport
RTB is a small airport with a long landing strip. The airport is conveniently located on the western side of Roatan, just off the main road and 3 km away from the Town Center and capital of the island, Coxen Hole. The airstrip sits right next to the clear turquoise waters of the Caribbean. The interior of RTB was remodeled in 2013. Today, RTB has a more modern design with commercial spaces for deli-type food locals and areas for duty-free and souvenir shops.

PRO TIP: If you take an authorized airport taxi to West End it will cost around $25. However, we recommend you negotiate the fare as some have negotiated rates as low as $15 per person.

Getting around Roatan.
Getting around Roatan can be tricky without the aid of Taxi operators. Car rental is affordable, but the rental agreements can carry stricter guidelines than you might be used to in the US. Rental companies can sometimes also ask for a large deposit upfront. Roatan Taxi services are a primary way in which tourist choose to get around the island. The services are also affordable. There are published rates, which come out of the local Taxi Association and there are negotiated rates which can be had by negotiated directly with the taxi operator.

Types of Aircrafts.
The Roatan International Airport does not have jetways (tunnels) to get you to the plane. Instead, they use big and long staircases to get you inside. At departure, before boarding the plane, they usually have both, the front and back doors open for large flights. It is important to note that some airlines might’ve been added or withdrawn from service at RTB. Check with the airport authorities for more details.

The Bakery Sandwich & Sub Shop
Sandwiches at The Bakery will cost between $6 for a veggie sub to $10 for a Southwestern Sub with ham, turkey, bacon, Swiss cheese, guacamole, chipotle mayo, lettuce, and tomatoes. The sandwiches are big and tasty. The Bakery is located on the Departures Lounge at the Airport.
Larry & Luey’s fly high bar (Tiki Bar)
Drink the infamous Monkey LaLa or grab a quick bite at this popular Tiki Bar that even locals love to visit. Larry and Luey’s is located just outside of the baggage claim doors (for arrivals) in the airport’s main lobby. Some other items in the menu at L & L’s are the Bloody Mary, frozen papaya margarita, pizza, and sandwiches.
