Justice on Trial
(Leer en Español)For all its history, Roatan has been home to foreigners from all over the world. That continues to be the case even today. And while Roatan is the smallest municipality in Honduras, it is also home to the largest ex-pat community in the country.
But why do so many foreigners choose to uproot their families, make a global change, and relocate to Roatan? Roatan's beauty has much to do with it, to be sure.
But other factors must also be in place for Roatan to qualify as a safe, investable, and adequate place to call home. Ultimately, Roatan must offer a just legal system that protects private property and personal liberties.
Included in the protection of “personal liberties” is the presumption of innocence, until proven guilty.
Yet earlier in the week, our mayor was arrested and made to pose next to a drug bust. The photos were aired on social media and reached an international community that lives and trades on Roatan.
These images were on par with those taken of El Chapo, who had already experienced several run-ins with the law and held a lengthy criminal record at the time of his arrest. By contrast, Jerry Hynds has no such prior criminal history. Quite the opposite, Mr. Hynds has a long-standing life as a public servant and entrepreneur.
Foreigners, and locals alike, have a vested interest in knowing that Roatan is committed to a proper due process, a fair hearing, and a just verdict in all criminal cases.
We all win when Roatan (and more broadly Honduras) shows itself to have a mature and just legal system that protects the personal liberties of its citizens & residents.
The media will publish anything that will drive up their viewership. But law enforcement should not be in the business of arranging derogatory photoshoots with citizens that have not yet received a fair trial.
As a political figure and established businessman, Mr. Hynds is sure to have strong allies who will come to his aid in times such as these. Unfortunately, however, there are bound to be enemies who wish nothing more than for the photographs to represent the truth accurately.

Justicia en Juicio
A pesar de toda su historia, Roatán ha sido el hogar de extranjeros de todo el mundo. Ese sigue siendo el caso incluso hoy. Y aunque Roatán es el municipio más pequeño de Honduras, también alberga la comunidad de expatriados más grande del país.
Pero, ¿por qué tantos extranjeros eligen desarraigar a sus familias, hacer un cambio global y trasladarse a Roatán? La belleza de Roatán tiene mucho que ver con eso, sin duda.
Pero también deben existir otros factores para que Roatán califique como un lugar seguro, invertible y adecuado para llamar hogar. En última instancia, Roatán debe ofrecer un sistema legal justo que proteja la propiedad privada y las libertades personales.
En la protección de las “libertades personales” se incluye la presunción de inocencia, hasta que se pruebe su culpabilidad.
Sin embargo, a principios de semana, arrestaron a nuestro alcalde y lo obligaron a posar junto a una redada de drogas. Las fotos fueron transmitidas en las redes sociales y llegaron a una comunidad internacional que vive y comercia en Roatán.
Estas imágenes estaban a la par con las tomadas de El Chapo, quien ya había experimentado varios enfrentamientos con la ley y tenía un largo historial criminal al momento de su arresto. Por el contrario, Jerry Hynds no tiene antecedentes penales. Todo lo contrario, el Sr. Hynds tiene una larga vida como funcionario público y empresario.
Tanto los extranjeros como los locales tienen un gran interés en saber que Roatán está comprometido con un proceso legal apto, una audiencia imparcial y un veredicto justo en todos los casos penales.
Todos ganamos cuando Roatán (y más ampliamente Honduras) demuestra tener un sistema legal maduro y justo que protege las libertades personales de sus ciudadanos y residentes.
Los medios de comunicación publicarán cualquier cosa que aumente su audiencia. Pero las fuerzas armadas no deberían estar en el negocio de organizar sesiones de fotos despectivas con ciudadanos que aún no han recibido un juicio justo.
Como figura política y hombre de negocios establecido, el Sr. Hynds seguramente tendrá fuertes aliados que acudirán en su ayuda en tiempos como estos. Desafortunadamente, sin embargo, es probable que haya enemigos que solo deseen que las fotografías representen la verdad con precisión.
