Bitcoin Roatán Launches “Bitcoin Arena” Project to Renovate Community Gym in Coxen Hole, Roatán

A community space at the center of Roatán’s youth life

In Coxen Hole, the largest indoor sports arena on the island of Roatán, Honduras, has long served as a central gathering place for youth sports, school activities, and community events. Built in 2013 next to the José Santos Guardiola school, the facility was originally designed to support a growing population of students and athletes. Over time, however, limited maintenance resources led to significant deterioration of the space, leaving it in a condition that no longer reflects its importance to the community.

Despite its physical decline, the arena has never been abandoned in practice. Each week, more than a thousand students use the facility for physical education classes, while local teams such as the Roatán Dolphins continue to train and compete in basketball, volleyball, and handball. In addition, marching bands rehearse there and schools regularly host cultural performances. The arena remains one of the most actively used public spaces on the island, even as its infrastructure continues to age.

The reality behind the renovation initiative

The current condition of the arena has raised long-standing concerns among educators, coaches, and community members. Structural issues such as broken doors, deteriorating bathrooms, damaged equipment, and lack of lighting have made it increasingly difficult to maintain a safe and inspiring environment for young athletes. For many students, however, the facility remains one of the few structured spaces available for consistent physical activity and social development.

On islands like Roatán, access to organized sports plays a critical social role. It provides routine, discipline, and mentorship opportunities that help keep young people engaged in positive environments. The absence of adequate infrastructure therefore has implications beyond sports—it directly affects community cohesion and youth development outcomes. This context has become a key driver behind efforts to restore and reimagine the space.

Bitcoin Roatán and the community-led vision

A group known as Bitcoin Roatán, composed of Bitcoin advocates living on the island including Ariana, Tomek, Dusan, and Matt, has initiated a project aimed at renovating the facility. Rather than simply repairing infrastructure, the initiative seeks to transform the arena into a renewed community hub that integrates sports, education, and inspiration.

The group’s approach is rooted in the belief that physical spaces can influence mindset and opportunity. The renovation project therefore combines infrastructure upgrades with a broader vision: introducing youth to new ideas, including Bitcoin education, while strengthening the role of sports as a foundation for personal growth. The initiative is supported by a matching donation model, where contributions are doubled by a sponsor, increasing the potential impact of community participation.

Reimagining the arena: design, identity, and purpose

The vision for the renovated space goes beyond functional repairs. The project includes a complete visual and structural transformation of the arena, designed to make it a place where children feel inspired to spend time. Plans include repainting the entire facility with vibrant, island-inspired artwork where the basketball court symbolizes Roatán rising from the ocean, surrounded by blue tones representing the Caribbean Sea flowing into the walls.

Local artists are being invited to contribute murals that reflect the island’s identity, culture, and environment. The design approach emphasizes subtle storytelling elements integrated into the architecture, encouraging reflection and curiosity among visitors. Community participation is also a core component, with students and residents expected to take part in painting and shaping parts of the space.

As part of this transformation, the facility is also set to be renamed the “Bitcoin Arena”, symbolizing a new chapter in its role within the community.

Progress, timeline, and ongoing development

Renovation work began in early April with an ambitious timeline aligned with an upcoming international school sports tournament scheduled for April 23–25. Early efforts have already included agreements with local authorities and schools, reconstruction of bathroom facilities, installation of new doors, and initial structural improvements such as drywall and roofing for new locker rooms.

The project is being executed with local labor and artists from Roatán, reinforcing its community-driven nature. The next phases include painting, installation of sports equipment, and completion of visual design elements. The goal is to have the arena functional and ready before the tournament begins, allowing it to serve both local students and visiting teams from countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador, and the Cayman Islands.

Funding model and community participation

The renovation is being financed through a community-driven funding model where donations are matched one-to-one by a sponsor, up to a set limit. This structure effectively doubles the impact of each contribution. All funds raised are allocated directly to the arena, covering essential infrastructure such as bathrooms, doors, paint, benches, sports equipment, and artistic installations. You can fund here.

Additional stretch goals include improvements such as a scoreboard system, upgraded sports gear, and potential connectivity solutions for community use. Recognition is also integrated into the project, allowing contributors to be acknowledged within the renovated space depending on their level of support.

A broader vision for youth development in Roatán

Beyond physical renovation, the project reflects a broader vision of youth empowerment on the island. The arena currently serves as a daily meeting point for students, athletes, and community groups, making it a strategic space for long-term social impact. By improving conditions and expanding its purpose, the initiative aims to strengthen the role of sports as a foundation for discipline, education, and opportunity.

The introduction of new ideas—ranging from creative expression through murals to educational exposure to emerging technologies—positions the arena as more than a sports facility. It becomes a space where infrastructure, culture, and innovation intersect.

Building together: the future of the Bitcoin Arena

As renovation efforts continue, the project remains open to community participation and support. Updates are shared throughout the process, documenting progress and ensuring transparency in how contributions are used. The long-term vision includes sustained programming for youth sports, periodic community events, and continued development of the facility as a self-sustaining space.

The transformation of the Coxen Hole arena into the Bitcoin Arena represents a broader shift in how community infrastructure can be reimagined on Roatán. It is not only about restoring a building, but about redefining what a shared space can represent for future generations on the island.
