Bay Islands Celebrate English-Speaking Afro-Descendant Heritage Month Throughout August 2026
Throughout August 2026, the Bay Islands of Honduras will celebrate English-Speaking Afro-Descendant Heritage Month, honoring the rich history, traditions, and cultural identity of the islands' Afro-Caribbean communities. This year's celebration is dedicated to the memory of Handford Bodden, former mayor of Utila, in recognition of his lasting contributions to the development of the Bay Islands.
The month begins on August 1 with Emancipation Day, featuring a morning service at the Flowers Bay Methodist Church, followed by a Christian gathering that officially launches Heritage Month in Savannah Bight.
Visitors and residents can enjoy a diverse calendar of events, including cultural days in communities across Roatán, Santos Guardiola, and Utila, spelling competitions, the traditional Chattah Talk, youth celebrations, community outreach activities, the BIPTA Tour Guides Gala, and the highly anticipated Utila Cultural Weekend from August 28–30.
Under the theme "Rise Up, Stand Firm, and Do the Work! Preserving Our Heritage for the Next Generation," the celebration highlights the customs, music, language, cuisine, and traditions that make the Bay Islands one of the Caribbean's most culturally unique destinations.
