Honduras Drops Measles Vaccine Entry Requirement for Tourists – July 2025 Update

In a major update that affects international travelers planning trips to Honduras, the Honduran government has officially cancelled the proposed measles vaccine entry requirement for tourists. The new directive, shared in an official government statement published jointly by the Ministries of Health, Tourism, Foreign Affairs, and the National Institute of Migration, confirms that the requirement will no longer apply to foreign visitors entering the country by air, sea, or land.

This decision, originally set to go into effect on July 7, 2025, comes after public concern and clarification efforts. It represents a significant policy shift aimed at balancing public health preparedness with the promotion of tourism in Honduras.

No Measles Vaccine Required for International Visitors

According to the official statement, the requirement to present a measles (MMR) vaccination card has been fully waived for all international travelers, regardless of their country of origin or age. This means that as of now, foreign tourists are free to enter Honduras without any need to present vaccination records or undergo on-site vaccination.

This decision aligns with current conditions inside the country. The Ministry of Health confirmed that there are still no active or confirmed cases of measles in Honduras at this time, which has allowed for the removal of restrictions for non-resident visitors.

Only Certain Honduran Citizens Still Need to Show Vaccine Proof

While the policy has been lifted for tourists, the vaccine requirement remains in place for a specific group of Honduran citizens:

  • Children aged 12 months to 10 years, who are leaving Honduras to travel to countries where measles outbreaks are active, must still present proof of vaccination.

This measure is part of the broader Health Alert for Measles, issued under Executive Agreement No. 001-2025, and was first published in the Official Gazette La Gaceta on June 27, 2025. The alert allows the Ministry of Health to respond quickly if international outbreaks escalate or if domestic cases appear.

WHO Data Will Guide Weekly Updates

To keep the public informed, the Ministry of Health (SESAL) will publish weekly updates on the list of countries experiencing active measles outbreaks. These updates will be based on data released by the World Health Organization (WHO) and will be made available through SESAL’s official website and social media channels.

Travelers departing from Honduras to countries on this list may still be subject to vaccination requirements, depending on their age and itinerary.

SESAL Vaccination Sites Remain Available for Citizens

The Ministry also stated that vaccination sites across Honduras will remain operational for citizens who need to meet the current exit requirements or choose to voluntarily update their immunization records. SESAL will continue to update the public regarding site availability and operating hours.

Final Word for Tourists: Travel Without Vaccine Proof

At this time, the final guidance from the Honduran government is clear: foreign visitors are not required to show proof of measles vaccination to enter the country. This update is expected to ease travel planning and encourage tourism, particularly during the busy summer season.

However, the Roatan Tourism Bureau encourages all travelers to stay informed by monitoring official government communications in case of any future changes.
