Satuyé Hospital Begins Operations in Roatán

A Milestone for the Island’s Healthcare System

On Thursday, September 11, Roatan will celebrate the inauguration of the Satuyé Hospital, a facility that represents a major step forward in healthcare services for the Bay Islands. The new hospital has been carefully designed to be spacious, functional, and patient-centered, ensuring that the local population has access to modern and comprehensive medical care. Equipped with advanced resources and staffed by a highly trained team of professionals, the hospital is positioned to significantly improve the quality of life for residents and visitors alike.

State-of-the-Art Infrastructure and Equipment

The Satuyé Hospital was built not only to replace its predecessor but to enhance its capabilities. Classified as a basic hospital, it continues to provide the four essential medical specialties: gynecology, pediatrics, internal medicine, and general surgery. To these, two additional critical specialties have been added—orthopedics and traumatology—expanding the scope of care available on the island. Complementary services such as radiology (X-rays), ultrasound, a fully functional kitchen, laundry services, and a morgue ensure that the hospital is well-equipped to handle both routine care and emergency situations.

One of the most notable innovations is the inclusion of an oxygen generation plant. This addition not only guarantees a steady supply for patients within the hospital but also provides vital support to the broader primary healthcare network in Roatan. This feature will be particularly impactful in responding to respiratory emergencies and surgical needs.

Expanded Capacity and Specialized Care

The hospital boasts a total of 62 beds, including 42 “sensables” (operational beds available for patient care) and 20 “non-sensables” (non-operational or administrative beds). This expansion reflects the institution’s readiness to meet the growing healthcare demands of the island. With two operating rooms—double the surgical capacity of the previous facility—the hospital is now equipped to handle a greater number of procedures efficiently and safely.

Beyond its surgical and inpatient facilities, Satuyé Hospital features dedicated areas for hospitalization, emergency care, outpatient consultations, and specialized admissions for gynecology and obstetrics. Expectant mothers will benefit from modern facilities designed to accommodate both vaginal deliveries and cesarean sections, ensuring safe and high-quality maternal care.

Serving the Entire Island Community

Although the hospital has adopted the name “Hospital Roatan” during its transition and official documentation process, this change will not disrupt operations. The institution is fully committed to serving the entire island population without geographic restrictions. From residents of Coxen Hole to the farthest communities on the island, all will have access to the hospital’s comprehensive medical services.

The opening of Satuyé Hospital is more than just the inauguration of a building—it is a symbol of progress and a promise of better healthcare for Roatan. With expanded specialties, modern facilities, and a dedicated medical team, this hospital is poised to become a cornerstone of the island’s public health system for years to come.
