Recommended Guidelines

Restaurant and Bars Guidelines

Our aim is that this guide may help local businesses better their operations for future tourists as they weigh their options of places they can travel to safely.

We want to do all that we can to assure future visitors to Roatan that our island is safe to visit and following proper COVID protocols.

Restaurants and hotels on Roatan should collaborate with local health officials, of course. But to the degree that local officials are unclear or less proactive about preparing others for a return to business, we hope this guide will help inform local businesses of the proper standards they should consider to remain industry leaders. Our goal is to supplement any recommendations provided by local health officials.

Restaurants and Bars should consider these guidelines:

It should go without saying that the more interaction there is between people, the risk of COVID propagation increases. Consider the following tiered risk profile:

  1. Lowest risk: food service limited to the drive-through, delivery, and take-out.

  2. Moderate risk: On-site food service should be limited to the outdoor seating. The seating capacity should be reduced so that tables are 6 ft from one another.

  3. High risk: If you offer food service indoors and outdoors, seating should be 6 feet apart for both interior and outdoor seating. Dining indoors increases the virus’ propagation.

  4. Severe risk: If you offer the dining services both indoors and outdoors and without 6ft of separation in between tables you are considered a high risk for propagation.

According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), the virus is spread primarily through respiratory drops released by people when they speak, cough, or sneeze. The virus can be transmitted to the hands through a contaminated surface via hand contact with the nose or mouth. That said, you should wash your hands consistently, perform regular cleaning of frequently touched surfaces, and stay home if you are sick.

Best Practices

  1. Develop policies that encourage sick employees to stay home if they have had contact with an infected person and monitor their health. If they test positive for COVID-19 or have symptoms, they should stay home.

  2. Require employees to wash their hands with soap and water frequently for at least 20 seconds and cover their nose and mouth with masks.

  3. Provide employees with the proper use of face masks.

  4. Availability of adequate supplies to promote hygiene habits. Such as soap, hand sanitizer on each table, paper towels, disposable face masks, sanitizing towels, trash cans that do not require contact.

  5. Place posters in visible places to promote daily protection measures and how to avoid the spread of the virus.

  • Setup Guidelines

  • Operational Considerations

  • Customer Management

  • Healthy Environment

Setup Guidelines

  1. Tables must be 6 feet apart

  2. A maximum group of 6 people at each table

  3. Clients from different families must sit 6 feet away.

  4. Clients from the same family can sit together.

  5. Social distancing must be maintained in restrooms and waiting areas.

  6. No person is allowed to sit or be served inside the restaurant.

Operational Considerations

  1. All restaurants must be in an open-air setting. Indoor service with air conditioning is not allowed.

  2. All employees must wear face masks and cover their faces.

  3. The sanitation sites must be set up according to the measures.

  4. Closeness or physical contact with others is prohibited.

  5. All employees must maintain a 6-foot social distance from their coworkers and clients.

  6. One-time paper menus will be used, or with a contactless menu.

  7. Shared seasonings are not allowed at the tables: all seasonings must be for single use only.

  8. Service personnel should wear gloves and a mask when handling used dishes and cleaning tables.

  9. Restaurants and bars must operate no later than 9 p.m.

Customer Management

  1. Customers can only be served when they are seated at a table. Not at the bar or standing.

  2. Customers must wear a mask at all times, even when they are not sitting at their desk.

  3. Closeness or physical contact with others is prohibited.

Healthy Environment

  1. Clean and disinfect frequently touched and shared surfaces.

  2. Establish a disinfection routine and train staff on cleaning procedures.

  3. Wash and disinfect surfaces that are in contact with food and make sure that there are no chemical residues.

  4. Prepare a schedule to increase routine cleaning and disinfection.

  5. Wear gloves to remove garbage and dispose of waste. Wash hands when removing gloves.

  6. Avoid sharing items that are difficult to clean or disinfect by providing adequate supplies to prevent this.

  7. Use a touchless payment method, receiving the exact cash or cards by placing on a receipt tray or on the counter rather than by hand to avoid direct contact.

  8. Use disposable utensils; if not, make sure to wash them with gloves and wash your hands when removing gloves.

  9. Make sure the ventilation systems are working properly and increase the circulation of outdoor air.

  10. Take necessary measures to ensure that water systems are fit for use after prolonged shutdown.

  11. Modify the entire restaurant area to maintain social distance.

  12. Install dividers where it is difficult to maintain a distance of at least 6 feet.

  13. Provide physical signs such as tape on the floor and signage to maintain adequate distance where lines form and in the kitchen.

  14. Close shared spaces to avoid using them.

Hotel Guidelines

The following protocols may assist hotel operations in their post-COVID opening. In this section, we detail protocols for each major department to follow in order to keep guest and employees operating safely.

As you would expect, an essential part of these protocols is employee training. Employees must know how to incorporate these guidelines into their workflow.

  • Front Desk Guidelines

  • Rooms & Housekeeping

Front Desk

  1. Limitation of hotel occupancy to a maximum of 50% and 60%.

  2. Temperature check guest at check-in.

  3. Implement Online Check-ins to avoid transacting in physical documents or currencies.

  4. Instal physical dividers at the front desk counter.

  5. Employees should keep their distance and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

  6. Employees should disinfect local work stations regularly and after each shift.

  7. Advance the check-out time and delay the check-in time so that your team can comply with new cleaning measures.

  8. All screens and monitors in lobby areas should be informative in nature.

Rooms and Housekeeping

  1. Remove Non-essential items such as coffee makers, brochures, etc., from rooms

  2. Limit amenities to only the essentials and include an antibacterial gel in each room.

  3. The staff will maintain the protocol to avoid contamination during the cleaning service.

  4. Impose daily disinfection of regularly touched surfaces such as doors, curtains, & TV controls.

  5. Perform cleaning with necessary chemical products on room surfaces when guest's check-out

  6. Create a disinfection team that specializes in cleaning rooms occupied by confirmed or suspected COVID cases.

Restaurant Guidelines

  1. Organize food shifts and reduce the number of people in the restaurant, making hand disinfection mandatory at the entrance.

  2. Each guest must wear a mask and gloves to approach the buffets or hostesses station.

  3. Any buffets should have individual servings and more packaged products, and show cooking.

  4. Impose a strict routine of monitoring temperatures.

  5. Frequent change of cutlery set, as well as hygiene and distance measure for employees.

  6. Tables may be covered with single-use tablecloths, and cutlery will be set on the table.

  7. Seat assignments will have to be made, keeping safe distances and avoiding the crossing areas.

Pools & Technical Services

  1. All pools should have occupancy limits and observe social distancing in the placing of chairs and tables.

  2. Frequently clean and disinfect common pool areas.

  3. Use appropriate water disinfection products for your specific situation.

  4. All personnel must wear masks and gloves.

  5. Maintenance personnel must ensure the proper operation of air conditioning equipment.
