Governor’s Corner
(UPDATED: 3/31/2020)
The Governor started his fifteenth live broadcast announcing a significant donation by an anonymous donor, which brings the total amount raised to $106,978.33 (L.2,669,109). The tremendous generosity by others visibly shook the Governor during the early days of the capital campaign.
Executive Meeting
Local business owners met with government officials today. During the meeting, business people urged government officials to lift the restrictions on local commerce; they argued that some trade is better than a nonexistent economy. The business people pointed out that the best strategy for absorbing the economic loss brought about by the departing tourism industry is to allow local businesses to engage in domestic trade.
Ordinance Update
The mayor's office submitted an ordinance, which included a few exceptions for the island of Roatan, but initially, the request was not well received by the central government. The recommendation that came down from the central government is to use other avenues and legal instruments to facilitate the operation of specific businesses. The goal is to get hardware stores and other essential businesses to become operational once again.
Donations
The donations website, which was announced this past Sunday, has already raised over $100K during its first 48 hrs online. The Governor is hopeful that the website will continue to raise funds for the disaster relief efforts on Roatan.
The real challenge is the lack of tourism born from the pandemic. For this reason, an online donations resource has been set up to help support the community at large. Donations can be made online through the Make it Count Foundation, who is a 501(c)(3).
The disbursement of these donations will be for emergency needs, healthcare workers, protective and medical equipment. Allocations of these funds will be transparent online.
